On the Horizon for Me
Not that you really care, but I suppose, considering this is my blog, I get a “get out of jail free” pass for writing about myself! From now, through August, a lot of stuff is going to happen for me. Maybe more than anything, this is mostly a way for me to track everything that’s going on.
1. New Rockable Press Tumblr Book
Last week, I submitted the draft for my latest book from Rockable Press. This one is going to detail the ins-and-outs of creating themes with Tumblr, from using post-types, all the way up to the Tumblr API. I’m told that, hopefully, it will be released in August.
2. TumblrToolbox.com
To coincide with the launch of the book, I’m also launching a non-Envato tutorial site, specifically for Tumblr development. It certainly won’t be as consistent as Nettuts+, for example, but you can expect to find at least two new awesome Tumblr tuts, in both written and video form every week.
I’ve already finished the design/coding of the site, and was able to work in some pretty cool stuff. Tumblr is a bit restrictive in the flexibility that it affords designers. As such, even things like creating featured posts becomes seemingly impossible. But, with a bit of JavaScript, I figured out how to do that, and a variety of other cool non-Tumblr-esque’ type stuff.
The website will launch the day that the book is released.
3. Wicked WordPress Themes
Just by coincidence, I have another book on WordPress coming out in August as well. Called “Wicked WordPress Themes,” from SitePoint, I, along with three other authors wrote two chapters for the book.
4. “The New Way of Creating WordPress Options Panels”
SitePoint asked me to write an article for their website, to coincide with the book’s release. I, just today actually, submitted an article on using the Settings API to create an options page for WordPress. Look for that article on their site in early August as well.
5. Envato Chicago
After two years of working with Envato, I’ll finally get to meet my co-workers and managers. The Australian team is flying to America for a US meet-up in Chicago, for the week. Super-exciting.
6. OOP With PHP: Video Series
I can’t say as much as I want to just yet — and it’s pretty big! But, I’ve begun creating an in depth, comprehensive video series on Object-Oriented-Programming with PHP for the launch.
Nice! Will the OOP With PHP: Video Series be on Nettuts?
You’ll find out soon. It’s a bit of a different arrangement.
Wow
can’t wait for it
Me neither!
Sounds pretty exciting Jeffrey. Will definitely be looking forward to TumblrToolbox as I’m just beginning to get into Tumblr development. And if your new PHP series is as good as “Diving in to PHP” then I’ll be looking forward to that as well. Keep it up!
Hey Jeffrey,
I’ve learned alot from your tutorials in the past several months and I wanted to say thanks.
Also, I was wondering if you could tell me what tools they used to create the pandora music player (music genome project)? I.E., passing recommendations from a database to a user while learning more about their likes and dislikes as they use it (much the same as Pandora.com does with the music genome project). Can this be achieved using MySQL and PHP? Can it be integrated into WordPress?
I apologize if this is not the proper forum for this question. If you could just point me in the right direction, I will be very grateful.
Thanks,
Chad
“I’ve begun creating an in depth, comprehensive video series on Object-Oriented-Programming with PHP for the launch.”
What launch? A new website? Can’t wait to watch this video series.
Hey Jeffrey,
Fist let me just say I really enjoy your tutorials. I have really learned a lot from them.
I was just wondering if you could tell me where you got your textmate colors for the code highlighting? Did you download the file somewhere or did you set them yourself? I really like them and would love to somehow get a hold of the file to set them.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
-Jason
Hey Jason – I can’t exactly remember. If you’re referring to the Twilight theme, that’s built into Textmate.
It’s possible to make the OOP series with Codeigniter?
that will be awesome
Well this is more of a crash-course style series, so CodeIgniter would be the next step after you learn the fundamentals.
Super great upcoming things
can’t wait tel these things are available
Hay Jay Way!!
Please cover PDO and MySQLi when you do the OOP PHP series.
Man I’m peeing my pants over here!!
Has nothing to do with your video series, but I’m sick.
haha – I’ve been meaning to get into PDO.
