Redesign Goodness
Welcome to a blog that will be rarely updated! Seriously, I’ll do my best to create unique tutorials for this site sporadically, but mostly I’ll be focusing on Nettuts+ and ThemeForest for new tutorials.
With that said, this new design is obviously very minimal – just how I like it! I’m not an “artist” at heart, and only want to get my information across as quickly as possible. As such, when designing this new WordPress theme, I set a goal of using zero images. While I came really close, I did end up using a couple for the layout. Nevertheless, this site should be super-fast – especially once I compress and cache everything.
Now that’s not to say that this site wasn’t built using the latest tools and standards! It was created with:
- WordPress 2.8
- jQuery Framework
- 960 CSS Framework (though not entirely necessary)
- Plenty of CSS3 goodness
- Cufon font replacement
So the site is, more or less, finished. The code needs to be cleaned up, a few plugins installed, and some optimization. But overall, I’m happy with it. It’s clean, simple, and perfect for the two posts each month that I’ll be making.
Question
I decided to remove the search functionality all together. Yesterday, it occurred to me that I rarely, if ever, search for something on a blog. Instead, I sporadically visit, read the last batch of articles, and move on. Should it be returned, considering how the WordPress search mechanism is rubbish to begin with?

Hi Jeffrey,
Awesome redesign. Its a breeze to read. Notice that there is no contact page or anyway to allow your readers to contact you via this blog. You may have done it deliberately, but still an awesome redesign. Less is more i guess

Really, really nice! For some reason, well-done minimalistic websites are just so compelling.
If you don’t mind, what font is that in the leading image in this post (”redesign!”) ?

Hey Andrew. I agree – but mostly, I’m not creative enough to do anything better.
The font is a free font called Cicle. http://www.dafont.com/cicle.font

Love the new clean, bright design.
I knew the headings were Cicle the second I saw them.

If you don’t mind me asking.. Why did you leave out a contact form/page?

@Meshach – Most people know how to contact me through Twitter or Nettuts+. Truthfully, I receive so many emails each day – that I don’t want any more.

Hi. Jeff, I’m a frequent reader of your posts and tuts, and IMHO I’m very pleased to see someone cared not only in blog/screencast something but to have good quality/content on it. For that, a big applause. You earn it.
However, I can’t help to say that, although minimalistic is actually good, huge headers are not so good (once more IMHO of course).
It’s a good design, in the ’simplistic’ matter, but it’s rather big (perhaps it’s my “standard market” screen resolution of 1280×960. Yupnotebook
).
Still, I like a lot of your screencasts and tuts @ net.tutsplus.com.
Btw, does NetTuts sends a tweet when you launch/post a tut? ‘Cause it seems not…
Hugs
